Hey there! If you’re reading this, chances are you’re either starting your data and AI path or you’re looking for a more structured approach to it. Both can be challenging, trust me, I’ve been there, and I’ve seen it all.

When I work with companies, especially those in the mid-sized range, I often encounter a recurring set of issues.

Does any of this sound familiar?

  • You’re not quite sure what data and AI can really do for your business.
  • You’ve read about amazing AI implementations in business magazines, but they all seem to be about billion-dollar companies. (Spoiler alert: what works for them will most likely not work for you!)
  • You have some tech-savvy folks on your team, but somehow, the strategic direction still feels… off.
  • AI seems like a black box. Maybe you’ve even fallen into the trap of thinking one “super AI” can solve all your problems, instead of having to connect some many different pieces (If only it were that simple!)
  • You’ve started data initiatives before, but somehow, they always seem to fizzle out.
  • Your data is, well, let’s be honest - it’s a mess. Or maybe you don’t even have the data you need.

If you’re nodding along, don’t worry. You’re not alone, and there’s a way forward. That’s why I developed the FORCE methodology. It’s not just another tech fad or a one-size-fits-all solution. It’s a timeless framework that can guide your data strategy, regardless of your industry or the latest tech trends.

What is FORCE?

You might be wondering, “Great, another acronym. What makes this one special?” Well, FORCE isn’t a rigid set of rules or a step-by-step implementation guide. Think of it more like the fundamental laws of physics. Just as understanding these laws helps engineers build everything from simple machines to complex rockets, FORCE provides the foundational principles for building a robust, adaptable data strategy based on timeless first priciples.

FORCE stands for:

  • Foundation
  • Observation
  • Resilience
  • Competence
  • Expansion

Let’s break these down, shall we?

Foundation: Getting Your Ducks in a Row

Need for Alignement

When I start working with a new client, one of the first things I often notice is a lack of alignment. Different departments have different data, different goals, and sometimes, they’re not even speaking the same language!

Ducks aligned in a row

I once worked with a retail company where the sales team, the inventory management team, and the finance team all had different numbers for the same metrics. Can you imagine trying to make strategic decisions in that environment?

Jets in Alignment

Foundation is all about getting everyone on the same page. It’s about aligning your organizational goals with your data initiatives.

Supporting Technology and Processes

Supporting Technology

Foundations is also about ensuring you have the right technologies and processes in place to support your data strategy.

An Aligned Team

But here’s the thing - it’s not just about technology. It’s about people and processes too. You need to break down those silos, get everyone talking, and create a shared understanding of what you’re trying to achieve with your data.

Observation: Opening Your Eyes to the Data

Once you’ve laid the foundation, and starting collecting your data, it’s time to start really looking. And I mean really looking.

Cockpit of a Plane

You might be thinking, “But we already have dashboards!” And that’s great! Dashboards and alerts are a good start. But Observation goes beyond that. It’s about actively seeking insights from your data, not just passively monitoring it.

Telescope

I often encourage my clients to think of their data as a living, breathing entity. It’s constantly changing, evolving, telling you new things. Your job is to listen and observe.

Another critical aspect is being notified when something happens, through alerts - both thresholdbased, and anomaly based.

This is where we start to uncover those hidden patterns and opportunities. Maybe you’ll discover a new bottleneck in your business, or a customer segment you hadn’t considered before. Or perhaps you’ll spot a trend that could help you optimize your supply chain.

Remember, observation isn’t a one-time thing. It’s an ongoing process. The more you observe, the more you’ll see.

Resilience: Preparing for the Unexpected and Building to Last

Now, let’s talk about something that’s become increasingly important in recent years - resilience.

Hanging by a Thread

I’ve seen too many companies put all their eggs in one basket, especially when it comes to AI. They become overly reliant on a single third-party API or a particular AI model. And when that service goes down or changes its pricing? Chaos ensues.

This precarious situation reminds me of the ancient tale of the Sword of Damocles. In the story, a king arranges for a sword to hang above his throne, held only by a single hair. This sword, hanging by a thread, perfectly symbolizes the danger of relying too heavily on a single point of failure in your data strategy.

Just like you couldn’t enjoy a feast with a sword dangling overhead, your business can’t truly thrive if it’s constantly at risk of collapse from a single point of failure.

Sword of Damocles

Built to Last

On the flip side of this, let’s talk about building something that stands the test of time. You see, in the world of tech, it’s easy to get caught up in always chasing the newest, shiniest tools. But there’s something to be said for creating systems and strategies that are built to last.

This reminds me of the Aqueduto do Convento de Cristo in Tomar, Portugal. Built in the 16th century during the Portuguese Renaissance, this remarkable structure served its purpose for over 330 years. Despite facing challenges like inadequate maintenance, vandalism, and the relentless forces of nature, significant parts of this aqueduct are still standing, containing water today, more than 400 years after its construction.

Aqueduto Convento de Cristo

The engineers who designed it didn’t have access to modern technology, but they understood the principles of durability and resilience. They built something that has withstood the test of time, even if its original purpose has evolved.

Now, I’m not suggesting your data strategy needs to last for centuries, but imagine if you could build something so robust, so well-designed, that it could adapt and evolve with your business for decades to come, even in the face of challenges and changes. That’s the kind of resilience we’re aiming for.

Resilience is about building a data strategy that can weather the storm. It’s about having backups, failsafes, and alternatives. It’s about ensuring that your data - and the insights you derive from it - remain available and reliable, no matter what.

This doesn’t mean you need to build everything in-house. But it does mean you need to think critically about your dependencies and have contingency plans in place.

Competence: Maximizing Your Data Potential

Competence is where the rubber really meets the road. It’s about taking all that foundation-laying, observation, and resilience-building, and turning it into tangible results.

Robots in Factory

This is where we look at your processes and start identifying opportunities for improvement and automation. And let me tell you, the results can be surprising!

I once worked with a manufacturing company that thought their processes were pretty streamlined. But when we really dug into the data, we found numerous small inefficiencies that, when added up, were costing them hundreds of thousands each year. By automating just a few key steps in their quality control process, we were able to significantly boost their productivity and reduce waste.

Factory

The key here is to be open-minded. Sometimes, it’s not about automating entire processes, but finding those small tweaks that can make a big difference.

Expansion: Taking Your Data Strategy to New Heights

Finally, we come to Expansion. This is where things get really exciting. For most this is where they finnally get to apply some serious AI and Machine Learning.

Rocket Launch

Expansion is about leveraging your data mastery to drive growth and innovation. It’s about using AI and machine learning not just to optimize what you’re already doing, but to explore entirely new possibilities.

Rocket Launch Long Exposure

This could mean developing new data-driven products or services. It could mean finding new ways to monetize your data. It could mean using predictive analytics to spot emerging trends before your competitors do.

I’ll be honest - this is an area where many companies struggle. They get so focused on using data to improve their existing operations that they miss out on opportunities for true innovation. But with the right approach, the potential is enormous.

Bringing It All Together: The FORCE Journey

Now, you might be thinking, “This all sounds great, but how do I actually implement it?”

That’s where the FORCE journey comes in. It’s not a linear process - it’s more of a cycle. You start by laying your Foundation, then move into Observation. As you gather insights, you build Resilience and develop Competence. This, in turn, enables Expansion, which often requires you to revisit and strengthen your Foundation.

It’s a continuous process of learning, adapting, and growing. And the beauty of it is that it’s flexible. Whether you’re a fintech startup, an e-commerce platform, or a manufacturing company, the FORCE principles can be adapted to your specific needs and challenges.
